gabapentin (neurontin) or Lyrica 3 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 2
Hey Folks,

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had experience with gabapentin or Lyrica. Although I originally started taking gabapentin (300mg) 3 x a day for intense nerve pain following sub-muscular transposition, I am taking it now for small fiber neuropathy. I am currently taking 600 mg 4 x a day. It helped with my post-op nerve pain, but really doesn't help with the neuropathy. Also, i HATE some of the side effects of it. I feel like I'm in a fog. Sometimes I can't find the right word when I'm in a conversation or I use a totally wrong word. Weird. It really makes me sleepy too and combined with some of the other meds I'm taking now makes that even worse.

My neurologist is recommending that I give Lyrica (pregabalin) a try. I've read about some of the side effects and am reluctant to add a different drug. I'm also a little afraid that some of the hypersensitivity in my elbow will come back and that was pretty awful. I couldn't even wear a long sleeve shirt because it hurt so badly. Has anyone out there used either one of these meds? I told my neuro doc I'd think about a trial but wanted to get some additional info first.

Thanks for reading the long post. Any experiences with either drug would be great.

Chris

I was given neurontin initially, and it made me SICK> an hour after my first dose I had flu-like symptoms (chills, sweats, felt feverish, nausea, the whole thing). Obviously /i couldn't deal with that (I tend to get lots of side effects, yay). So now I take Lyrica, and I don't have any side effects, interestingly. I do find that it helped my symptoms both prior to and after my most recent round of ops.

i HATE taking meds. i would rather have the pain. but this nerve pain is too much for even me. i took lyrica for about 3 months. my pain was almost gone so i quit taking it. well, the pain came back with a vengence. i am now taking lyrica again. i have been on it for about a week now. the pain is a lot more bearable but still quite intense. it does take a while for it to become totally effective. as far as side effects, i have none. lyrica is one of those meds you either hate it or you love it. go ahead and try it. it is a very good med for nerve pain. it is pretty much like any other med some people just cant tolerate it and other people have no problem with it. i think it is worth the risk. hope you have insurance, though. 90 pills (one month supply) cost almost $300

Hello again,

Jmar and chochlowski, thanks for responding to my post. Jmar, I'm with you. I can't stand having to take meds either. And until about 9 months ago I rarely took any meds. Now I take about 12 different meds. YUCK!

I am currently weaning my gabapentin down a little and then will start Lyrica in about a week. I've decided to give it a try.

THanks again for the replies,

Chris

good luck chris. i have a brachial plexus injury. that means my entire arm and hand have SEVERE nerve damage. it also caused cubital tunnel. i have very little use of my hand. the lyrica is the only med that helps. i hope it helps you as much as it does for me. it has been almost 2 weeks now that i have been back on it and it is tolerable now. but still a great deal of pain

Wow jmar. Sorry that you've had such a tough time of it. I'm glad you're getting some relief from the Lyrica. Hope it works for me well. I'm kind of on hold right now while my rheumatologist and neurologist figure out a plan of action. Apparently I've got drug interaction issues.
