shoulder pain after surgery 1 Year, 10 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi Everyone,

Has anyone had problems with their shoulder after surgery?

I am 4months post subq surgery and I have shoulder restricted movements which I did not have prior to surgery.

I thought this was due to having a cast on after the surgery and thought it would resolve itself with persistent stretching. It's been 4months now with no avil. My doctor does not indicate that this is a normal occurence after surery, but wanted to check with you all to see if I'm not the only one.

Anyone else out there in the same boat? If so, how did you resolve the shoulder issue?

Thanks,
Cindy

Howdy Cindy!!!

Short answer, YES! Basically what I figured out for me was pretty darn simple...My PT pretty well covered the elbow and below. My upper arm, shoulder etc., was not added in. I bought my own bands (non Latex), coated weights from 2-5 pounds. I then started gentle extensions, biceps curls, taking my arm from my side and gently raising it sideways and horizontal in front straight up. Basically my shoulder muscles were being ignored, and started to stiffen up a bit from lack of use.

For the bands, I used them for resistance training fore and aft to stretch out the muscles but keep some tension on them. I would take one set of bands and put a big knot - then threw it over the top of a door, closed it - instant resistance machine! I could then do pull downs, folded arm pulls, rowing type maneuvers etc., even made some up! While the first couple of days my pain increased, it was "muscle" pain, and came down fast. The shoulder itself progressively got better. I hope this helps.

Oh, and another thing about my "gentle" moving and non impactive strength exercises? If there was something "hurt" in my shoulder, I wasn't aggravating it. Take care.

Thanks for your reply Brenda.

I like the band with the door tip! I've been doing 2xd daily stretches and light strenght training. When I lift my arm up my hand goes numb, it feels like a knife pain in the shoulder and instant numbness in the hand.

I'm going back to the doctor next month to see what he says. Did you have numbness along with your shoulder weakness when you were recovering?

Howdy Cindy, glad to help!!! As for numbness, where in specific? I know if I pushed it too much, my fingers would get odd feelings and if too many of my exercises were with my arm folded, I had some. The only numb area on my elbow was around and outside of my incision.

Hi Brenda,

I get hand numbness when I lift my arm up (I feel it pinch my shoulder and my hand goes). Same when I lift it to the side (like I'm prentending to fly).
If I lay down and try to make 'snow angels' I can't move my arm from my side to my head. May arm gets stuck with pain in the scapula and again the hand goes numb.

What do you think?

Howdy Cindy,

A bit of troubleshooting questions, okay? On your shoulder blade, what area of it? In the shoulder for the pinching, (outer, front, back?). As for your hand, what part specifically of your hand is this happening - any numbness down the arm at all? Any specific muscles in the upper or lower arm hurting while you do the activities you mention?

It is very odd to have the "whole" hand for instance go numb, so trying to fine tune a bit in an attempt to help. Of course too, don't forget to let your surgeon know of these happenings if possible. Could all be part of your continued recovery, but too can be more issues above the elbow now coming to light.

I'll check in later.
