Genetic Predisposition 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 3
As I read lots of posts from all of us with this problem, it seems there are quite a few who have both arms involved to a larger or lesser extent. Also, for some their Dr.s tell them they were just born a certain way, or theirs was a little different than usual....etc. Got me to wondering if maybe for some of the population there isn't some kind of genetic predisposition toward this ailment. I know even as a kid mine seemed pretty sensitive, just leaning normal stuff and many a morning I would wake with a numb arm/hand. Now, that my left arm is somewhat out of commission and have been overusing my right , that one seems to be sensitive and mine ulnar was not from repetitive usage but from a fracture. Pretty in-terrrr-essss tink........possibily same could be said for carpal. If that's even near the truth, I might be able to nip it in the bud before my right arm show up with it..... like wearing Phyliss' sock idea to bed and take more preventative measures. Check out your kids for this....... Jennifaux

Hi Jen,

I asked my neuro about the genetic predisposition. In fact that is exactly what I called it. He said "yes", but a qualified "yes." Briefly, he said if one side has it, the other side is more likely to get it for a couple of reasons. First, the cubital tunnel area is probably the same. Second, the underlying activities, if any, that agrevated the first will probably be there for the second, too. That seems to fit my case.

I started doing more preventative stuff for my right arm much sooner than for the left. Time will tell how much good that will do. So far, it seems to be regressing more slowly than the left, but still too fast.

BTW, I'm going to go thump my kid on the elbow and blame it on you

Not sure if it is genetic but my sister had the problem on her arm a bit over 10 yrs ago after an auto accident but no problems since. I have cuts in both arms.

One thing I have learned through researching some of my other health problems is that diabetics and people with hypothyroidism are more so predisposed to both cuts and carpal tunnel. Just my luck I have both.

Hi there Kerley I had my rt arm fixed a bit over a yr ago the surgeon who did it is fantastic (and rather nice on the eyes at the same time lol) He also had to do a carpal tunnel on my rt hand last April.

On my left elbow and hand (need carpal tunnel surgery there too) we are having to wait till I get my rt shoulder back into shape a bit better (major rotator cuff repairs there that I am still going to physical therapy for)

I noticed on your profile you are not far from me if you are looking for a good hand specialist I can give you the name of mine and one who is a neuro surgeon instead of orthopod that I hear good things about.
