Timeline of recovery? 3 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
I am hoping someone can help me with what to expect for a timeline of recovery.

I am an English teacher, and I'm trying to figure out how long I should expect to be out for submuscular ulnar nerve transposition. My job requires me to use my hand to write, pretty much all day. I write on the board, write on paperwork, and then write even more when I grade papers and leave commentary.

Additionally, I teach in a way overcrowded school, so at any given time, I am on duty in the hall with about 400 eighth graders.

I know that they won't let me come back in the cast, but how long do you wear the splint? Is it reasonable to think that it would be about 6 weeks before I'm able to return with no restrictions?

Thanks so much

Greetings
There is quite a lot of information on this site about recovery times.
I have not had surgery yet, not sure when it is going to be, hopefully not too long. It appears some people need 6 weeks off following the surgery. The actual healing in my understanding can take up to 9 - 12 months to get the full benefits.
It appears pain and swelling can be an issue.

When are you due to have your surgery?

PS: My Doctor said I would not need a cast, he only uses a cast if he ?scrapes bone? (I think that is what he said). He said I would have a very thick bandage from underarm to fingertips, I am having carpal tunnel done at the same time.

Thanks for your reply

I spoke with the surgeon's office on Friday and got some answers--not what I wanted to hear, but I did get answers.

First, she is filling out my disability paperwork with me being out for 10 weeks. During that time, I will have restrictions on using my arm at all. However, she said that after 6 weeks, if I am doing well, they will possibly release me with limited use, rather than no use.

As far as the cast, I will have a hard cast for 2 weeks (submuscular transposition). Then at my post-op he will take the cast off and determine if I need more time in the cast or if I can just do the splint/soft cast. I'll be in the splint/sling for another 6 weeks after that.

All of that said, it is important to note that this is actually my second surgery. I had ulnar decompression on June 3, but at my 6 week post-op, he discovered that my nerve was subluxing.
