Hey Everybody,
Went to OT again. Now I have another question for all my CuTS folks. I've managed to stay away from neurontin/Lyrica, etc. My OT thinks I should talk to my doc about going on one of these because my hypersensitivity is so bad right now. I have weird reactions (not really allergies) to lots of meds so starting anything new is always a concern.
It's almost funny how bad this hypersensitivity is. I tried to wear a compression sleeve the other day. I put it on and in about 10 minutes I started feeling nauseous. I thought I'd try and wait it out, but after 1/2 hour I started dry heaving. SERIOUSLY!!? I took it off and felt better almost immdiately. It's not only the scar now. It's all the way down the nerve and into my little finger. But aside from that - I feel like I'm already benefitting from the surgery.

Howdy Chris,
I hope it works for you if they put you on a nerve med for your hypersensitivity. I have been on Lyrica due to my spine since December, and while it works GREAT for my "internal" nerve issues, it doesn't touch my thoracic which is all surface - burning on the skin of the affected level all the way around! I wear a rib brace so nothing 'brushes' the area.
I also fully understand your reluctance to various drugs due to allergies. Been down that road myself a few times to many - makes ya very nervous justifiably! I make sure with new scrips anymore - that my hubby is home....just in case!!! Please keep us posted. *hug*

Hey Folks,
Well....I had my six week post-op visit with my surgeon. Clawing and sensation are a little better than they were pre-op, but still a long way to go. My incision looks great!
We discussed starting Lyrica for my hypersensitivity and for my "zingers" which are coming more frequently. (sometimes for hours at a time about every 5 seconds or so). I have an underlying autonomic nervous system dysfunction that has been well controlled for over 5 years but has kind of "resurfaced" in the past few weeks. We decided the safest route to go is to consult with neurology before starting any new meds. I personally think the two things are somehow related, but really want to check it out. My appointment in 6/3.
I'm working really hard to desensitize the nerve from my elbow down into my hand, and hopefully that will help too.
Chris

Hi Chris,
Hope the Lyrica works out for you if you end up trying it. What other neurological problem do you have?

What do you do to desensitize the nerve? Just curious, as I have not heard of doing that before. Thanks.

I think Chris is talking about desensitizing nerves in the surgical scar. I used a washcloth to rub against the scar, tapped it lighly with my finger, rubbed fairly hard circles with fingers to break up scar tissue formation. Basically just trying to get the skin use to being touched again.
I read it takes the nerves it the scar up to 1000 finger taps before they calm down and start reacting more like the nerves in the rest of your skin.
