Sugery Scheduled... 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello,

I'm having cubital tunnel & carpal tunnel releases on March 16, 2010.

My surgeon told me I will be in a splint for 2 weeks so that has me wondering what kind of release is being done on my elbow.

I've been in contact with my physical therapist who has followed me through all the treatments thus far. His response to my questions were: they may cast you in a long arm cast to include the wrist and elbow. If you are splinted you might have one long one. Sometimes it is referred to as a sugar tong splint.

This stems from an injury last July when I accidently stepped on my doxie.

I'm looking forward to chatting with all the veteran's that have had these procedures done.

Thanking you in advance!

MaryAnn

I had transposition and the medial epicondylectomy, *no* carpal tunnel, and my splint looked like this. It felt more comfortable than it looks.

I had it for 8 days.

I received a sling at the hospital which I never wore. First, the instructions were to keep the elbow elevated. It was easier done on pillows than with a sling, especially since I had no control over the angle of the elbow. Second, the wrapped hand felt so warm (and made me feel so hot), there was no way I was going to wrap it in anything else.

Olga,

Thank you for sharing a photo of your splint; now I have an idea of what to expect when I come out of surgery.

I have been preparing the things I may need after surgery such as my pillows for the elevation part, making my meals ahead of time, etc. Am uncertain as to what kind of pain to expect after this but confident I will be able to handle whatever comes down the line.

Will keep all informed of my progress.

Thanks!

Hi Mary Ann,

I had both procedures plus Guyon Canal release done last October. I was in a full arm splint for 15 days and then a wrist splint for another month. The hand definitely takes longer to heal. I went back to work after 3 weeks and it was another week before I could really type. You'll feel sore in the elbow, like you bruised it for some time. Some motions will hurt, like washing my hair was a little painful but nothing really bad. All in all, it wasn't that rough. Good luck and I'll be happy to answer any questions if you have any!
