Hello fellow CuTS sufferers!
I just got back from the doctor. Was told I need surgery on my left elbow. The results of the NCV test was 30.7 and he said that was one of the slowest speeds he had ever seen. I have had numbness and pain since October. He said surgery would be better sooner than later. He recommended subcutaneous transposition.
I have no insurance. The doctor has indicated that he will give me a discount and will try to work something out with the surgery center regarding a discount. Once I have a dollar amount I will know if I can even afford this... sooooo
my questions:
Have any of you postponed surgery and for how long?
If you delayed surgery, what were your results?
If I don't have surgery, how long before I develop the claw?
Is there any coming back from the claw once its happened?
I probably have more questions but my brain is just so boggled at the moment..lack of sleep (new puppy).. I just can't think.
Thanks for any and all info.
Phyllis

Howdy Phyllis, and welcome to the site!!!
My Cubital (and Guyon's [in the hand]) where the issue with me. A week before the surgery my ring and pinkie fingers started clawing tight. My Cubital started about a year or so earlier, but I didn't have the fumble fingers, numbness etc. until the last 3 months before surgery. For my clawing they released the "A-1 pulleys" in my hand. They are the pulley's located below the fingers in the Palmer's crease - that is that horizontal crease on your palm below your fingers.
When I awoke, my pinkie still wanted to claw a bit, but within a month, both fingers were controllable and no longer clawing. I did get cramping some months later as the healing process continued, but the fingers were fixed with the pulley's released.
I didn't delay the surgery much at all. By the time it was advised I have surgery, I had lost so much strength and control of my hand, for me it was a "no brainer" and I had it done. I wasn't in the same insurance status as you are. If I were, I (if the payment schedule and fee's are acceptable) would try to get the surgery if the symptoms are affecting your daily life, or the doctor tells you that you are at risk for permanent damage. Remember, there is only "one" of you! Take care, and please keep us posted. Take care.
Brenda

Hello Brenda!
Thanks for responding. Since I posted I got a call from the doctor's surgery coordinator and the surgery is doable financially. Thank Goodness! I am scheduled for Feb 13. I don't have any clawing yet but I do have considerable weakness in my left hand. I have dropped a few things though. I will keep you posted.
My best to you,
Phyllis

Howdy Miss Phyllis!!!
I am so glad to see this is going to work out for you - that also speaks a lot for some doctors now a days!! Bravo!!!! Hopefully you won't go into the clawing mode. Heh (snickering to myself), yeah I remember the ole butter fingers with things!!! See, "Good things DO happen to good people!!!" Sorry, your post made me smile broadly!! Please keep us all updated on how it goes.
Please keep in mind (especially if you have a lot of numbness now), the nerve heals slowly, so if you wake up, and feel numbness, not a bad sign!!! Chat again soon.
Continued best wishes!!!!
Brenda

Hi,
I'm glad to hear that you are able to afford the surgery!
I had subcutaneous transposition in November 09. My hand / arm was very weak prior to the surgery and is now regaining strength.
So, I guess you have a few weeks to prepare yourself / your house for the upcoming event. Let us know if you have questions.
Take care,
Cindy
